Container Types

Different Types of Shipping Containers

Dry Containers

Dry containers are designed for general cargo that is not over-length, over-width, over-height, over-weight, or in bulk. Constructed from durable steel, they provide excellent sturdiness and easy repair. Note that 45ft containers may not be available on all trade routes.

Reefer Containers

Reefer containers are equipped with temperature control systems for transporting frozen, chilled, or warm cargo. A built-in refrigeration unit at the front provides cooling or heating, powered by a generator (on wheels), terminal power (in yards), or the ship’s system (onboard).

Air is circulated continuously through an internal duct system — flowing under, over, and through the cargo — ensuring consistent temperature throughout the journey.

Flat Rack Containers

Flat racks are ideal for heavy-lift, over-height, or over-width cargo. These containers have collapsible end frames and lashing rings along the base, corners, and floor for securing loads with straps or chains.

Open Top Containers

Open top containers are used for over-height or lengthy cargo. Instead of a solid roof, they feature a removable weatherproof tarpaulin secured with ropes. The metal beam above the door can swing open or be dismantled, allowing easy loading.

Lashing rings inside the base keep cargo secure during transit, making open tops perfect for tall or irregular shipments.
